Friday Wine Tasting in the Shop, 5pm – 8pm

If you’re not observing “Dryuary” (which would be even more challenging this year, right?!) then you’ll be happy to know that we got a little drop of Jenny & François wines in the shop. Some we’ve had before, some are new to us, all are welcome additions right now. We’ll open some up tonight, so swing by.

Speaking of Jenny & François: our friend Nick Gorevic will be in town pouring wines from the portfolio as guest bartender at Fortnight on Sunday. Should be a good time!

La Grange Tiphaine Nouveau Nez 2014

La Grange Tiphaine was created at the end of the 19th century by Alfonse Delecheneau, followed by three generations: Adrien, Jackie & now Damien. Coralie, Damien’s wife, has now joined the family as a fully active partner in the life & work of their 10 hectares vineyard. Damien’s talent as a winemaker is evidenced by the multitude of beautifully balanced, elegant, precise red, white, rosé & sparkling wines that he crafts from five different varietals: Chenin blanc, Côt (Malbec), Gamay, Cabernet Franc, & even the ancient & rare Loire variety called Grolleau. The wines are in the AOCs of Touraine Amboise & Montlouis sur Loire. The wines are all different: tender or round, fine or fruit filled, dry or sweet, but they all share the common thread of careful work in the vines that make for beautifully balanced, terroir driven, precise wines. They are certified organic.

Nouveau Nez is natural sparkling Chenin Blanc from young vines, bottled before the end of fermentation.

Les Vignerons D’ Estézargues is a unique co-operative cellar in the small town of Estézargues. Starting in 1995, the ten different growers in this co-op began to vinify their wine separately and make single cuvées from their best plots. Soon they began to practice natural winemaking, becoming one of the first (and perhaps only) co-ops in the world to do so. Les Vignerons D’ Estézargues uses no external yeast, no filtering, no fining and no enzymes in the winemaking process.

Estezargues Les Grand Vignes Blanc 2015

70% Grenache Blanc, 10% Clairette, 10% Bourboulenc, 10% Viognier.

Vinification Method: Hand harvested. No external yeast & no enzymes are employed during winemaking. The bunches are de-stemmed & the fruit undergoes fifteen days of maceration and the wine is stored in enamel-lined tanks for 10 months before it is bottled w/out fining or filtration.

Tasting Note: Pale straw in the glass with shimmering silver highlights. Scents of pear and mellowing yellow apple dominate the nose and are followed by a note of hay and white flowers. The palade is clean and supple with intense flavors of stone fruit & some tropical fruit flavors as well. The wine finishes with notes of dried apricot, white flowers and wet stones.

Pairing: Works beautifully by itself or with chicken, rabbit, & grilled fish dishes.

Estezargues Les Grand Vignes Rouge 2015

100% Cinsault.

Vinification Method: Hand harvested. No external yeast and no enzymes are employed during the winemaking process. The bunches are de-stemmed and the fruit undergoes fifteen days of maceration and the wine is stored in enamel-lined tanks for 10 months before it is bottled without fining or filtration.

Tasting Note: Garnet in the glass with shimmering highlights. Elegant notes of smoky red fruit, violet, sweet herb and a note of baking chocolate. The palate is rich with ripe cherry and berry flavors, and a mineral note that is followed by supple acidity and velvety tannins. This is a very expressive red with a great concentration of fruit and yet it is never overly extracted. The wine finishes with floral notes and a dash of black pepper.

Pairing: Works wonders with grilled chicken and pork, cold cuts, or simply by itself.

Le Bout du Monde L’echapée Belle 2014

Edouard Lafitte is a peer of Jean-Francois Nicq (the founding winemaker at Estezargues) and Eric Pfifferling of Domaine l’Anglore. All of these winemakers are known for working with Carbonic Maceration, and we find Edouard’s wines to be consistently some of the best of this style in southern France. The use of carbonic in the hands of the right winemaker can yield a wine of startling finesse and terroir. Le Bout du Monde located in a new burgeoning hotspot of natural winemakers centered around the tiny village of la Tour de France (not to be confused with the more masculine sounding bicycle race, le Tour de France). There are about a dozen young natural winemakers working in this area, but Edouard is one of the first to arrive, back in 1995. One of the first visitors to his winery saw the isolation of this spot and termed it “le bout du monde,” the end of the world. The vistas of the Pyrénées-Orientales mountain ranges framing the vines here completely take your breath away. Edouard says many days when he’s laboring away in the vines under the hot sun and gets fatigued, all he has to do is pause and take a look around him at the natural beauty to become completely revitalized.

60% Syrah, 40% Carignan planted on Gneiss and Granite.

Grapes are hand harvested and fermented whole cluster at low temperature in fiberglass tanks for about 15 days. No pigeage or pumping over is performed. The wine is aged in 7 year old 228 liter barrels for about 7 months, bottled with 1 miligram of sulfur per hectoliter and is unfiltered and unfined.

Bodega Eladio Santalla “Hacienda Ucediños” Godello 2014, Galicia Spain

Brothers Eladio and Marco Santalla own a restaurant in Galicia named Pulperia El Dorado, where they pair their wines with traditional Galician food, such as pulpo Gallego. Godello is a fine match for this “fair or street-style” octopus, but it also pairs beautifully with other salty, paprika, and olive oil rich dishes.

Godello is grape variety native to north west Spain and northern Portugal. It was rescued from near extinction in the 1980s and produces well-structured, dry whites that some compare to the fine whites of Burgundy. It’s identical to the Portuguese variety known as Gouveio in the Douro and in Dão.

Hacienda Ucediños is 100% estate-grown fruit. It’s clean and fruity, with green apple, pear, a touch of peach and a pleasant green herbaceous quality. A little bit of creaminess on the palate combines with crisp acidity to make this a wine to pair or to sip on its own.

Chemins de Bassac Isa Rosé 2015, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Isabelle and Rémy Ducellier own and operate this small, organically certified estate located in Vin de Pays des Côtes de Thongue, which is a collection of 14 villages in the Languedoc. The vineyards are 100 feet above sea level and are influenced greatly by the nearby Mediterranean. The wines of Chemins de Bassac are friendly and easy-going, generous and inviting.

Isa Rosé is a blend of Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre and Syrah. It’s loaded with strawberry, cherry and raspberry; it’s rich and zesty at the same time, the dry finish balancing out the smooth & creamy mid-palate texture. This is another for seafood and spring and summertime fresh and casual meals.

Domaine Rimbert “Les Travers de Marceau” 2014, St. Chinian, France

This is a blend of Carignan, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre from ancient vines that grow in schist rich soils in the highest elevation vineyards in St. Chinian. The grapes are hand-harvested and de-stemmed before being gently pressed. Only indigenous yeasts are used and all the varietals are fermented separately before being blended and bottled with minimal filtration.

Importer notes: Jean-Marie Rimbert, a native of Provence, arrived in the Languedoc nearly twenty-five years ago and managed the vineyards at Château de Flaugergues for five years until he saved up enough money to purchase his first parcels of gnarled ancient vine Carignan that had been nurtured in schist-laden soils for the better part of the last century. Today, Jean-Marie has 20 hectares spread amongst 40 diverse parcels each with different soil compositions and expositions. Berlou has the highest elevation in all of the St. Chinian AOC and is the only place in the region that possesses schist rich soils. From the beginning, his objective was to cultivate vineyards with the utmost respect for the environment and his wines reflect all of the natural beauty, depth and flavor originating from those vines. The wines Jean-Marie crafts are a passionate testament to this region’s multi-dimensionality and ever-expanding potential.

Comando G “La Bruja de Rozas” 2014, Vinos de Madrid, Spain

La Bruja de Rozas is 50-80 year old Grenache, grown on granite, from several organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards. Comando G is 8 hectares and sits at 1100 meters above sea level. Like their single vineyard wines, La Bruja de Rozas is hand harvested, undergoes natural yeast fermentation with a long maceration, followed by five months in 500 liter foudre.

Importer notes: Daniel Landi and Fermando Garcia, friends since college, found themselves working in the area bounded by the Sierra de Gredos: Dani at his family’s estate, Bodegas Jimenez-Landi and Fermando at Bodegas Marañones. Drawn to the mountains and rumors of small, nearly inaccessible vineyard plots located high in the Sierra de Gredos, over time they began purchasing and leasing the best sites they could find, creating their own project, Comando
G in 2008. Along with many of the new innovators in the Priorat, Dani and Fernando are redefining what was previously viewed as a workhorse variety, Garnacha, into something that can rival the elegance and finesse of Pinot in Burgundy or Syrah in Hermitage. Read more here.

Ca dei Zago Prosecco Col Fondo 2014, Veneto

 

We continue to flip over this gentle little fizzy. It’s light, refreshing and good anytime of day, and with any meal – or with no meal at all. It’s a blend of Glera from very old clones, Verdiso, Perera, and Bianchetta from massale selection. Col Fondo means ‘on the sediment’ so you can store it upright and enjoy the sediment separately (as they do in Valdobbiadene) or swirl it as you drink so that it’s incorporated throughout. Either way is the right way. The 2014 is so fresh and delicious, we just want to drink it all the time. It’s like a mouth full of crisp apples and pears; it’s super clean, softly sparkling, and all around satisfying. This is just what you need to welcome your holiday guests: it’s fun, interesting, and at just 10% abv, it’s perfect for easing into the party–or for brunch the next day. Chemins de Bassac Isa White 2014, Languedoc-Roussillon

Isabelle and Rémy Ducellier own and operate this small, organically certified estate located in Vin de Pays Côtes de Thongue, which is a collection of 14 villages in Languedoc. Like Isabelle and Rémy, the wines of Chemins de Bassac are friendly and easy-going, generous and inviting. Together they make and market their wines, with Rémy even designing the labels.

Isa White is a blend of Roussanne and Viognier that is gorgeously aromatic, lushly textured, and popping with flowers, ripe peaches and apricots. It’s beautifully balanced with stony minerality and a touch of orange pith on the long finish.

Domaine Jérôme Jouret La Coulée Douce 2014, Rhone Valley

Domaine Jérôme Jouret is a 12 hectare, relatively new, family winery in the southern Ardèche, a region on the right bank of the Rhône river, between the northern and southern Rhône valley. Burgundian Louis Latour was a pioneer here, most notably with his Grande Ardéche Chardonnay. We’re most familiar with the cult wines of Hervé Souhaut, which we try to have on our shelves whenever we can. Jérome Jouret works much like Souhaut; that is, minimally, by hand, with extremely low yields and little to no sulfur. The ancient, organic vines here are planted on steep and stony slopes. The high elevation and cool climate means that the grapes have a longer hang time, which leads to heady aromatics and purity of fruit. This unsulfured Syrah comes on with clean, vibrant fruit that gives way to smoky, minerally notes, then takes another turn to flowers and fresh tobacco. The texture is refined, as is the experience of drinking this wine.

Domaine du Mortier Graviers 2013, Loire Valley

Domaine du Mortier is a 9 hectare, certified biodynamic property located in Saint Nicolas de Bourgeuil. Brothers Fabien and Cyril Boisard were quite young when they started Domaine du Mortier nearly ten years ago. And while they don’t hail from a long line of winemakers, they do employ the most traditional method of propagating vines: Selection Massale, a labor intensive and time consuming practice of selecting the best vines in a vineyard and propagating through cuttings. With this level of discipline and commitment, it’s no surprise that they always produce top notch wines, from glou-glou to lay-it-down. All wines here are bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Mortier Gravier is 100% Cabernet Franc grown on gravel. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with wild yeast in barrel, then aged for 8 months in oak. This is a raspberry and cassis scented wine, with the mineral (gravelly) notes intertwined with juicy fruit, subtle spices and a satisfying roundness on the palate.

2014 Domaine de la Pépiere Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine sur Lie

Marc Ollivier is one of the best producers of Muscadet that we’ve ever encountered. His Muscadet has lees contact until the time of bottling, which is the traditional way to make Muscadet, but has become the exception. Ollivier hand harvests, uses natural yeasts & bottles with a very light filtration. The vineyards are 40+ years old & all from original stock; there isn’t a single clonal selection in the vineyards.

This wine never, ever fails to deliver. It’s a rocky, salty, twangy, lip-smacky, refreshing bottle of goodness!

2014 Domaine Rimbert “Petit Cochon Bronzé Rosé”, St. Chinian, Languedoc

It’s hard to ever say no to this little piggy. This rosé is made from a blend of Cinsault & Syrah, from vines of about 60 years old. The grapes are harvested at maximum ripeness and immediately de-stemmed, then gently crushed and fermented with natural yeast. The skins are removed from the vats 36 hours after pressing, lending this rosé its beautifully intense pink color. This wine is typically light and spicy, with bright red fruit, like cherries and a strawberries, and a clean and zesty finish.

2014 Domaine Rimbert “Cousin Oscar” Vin de France (St. Chinian)

He’s back! Made from Jean-Marie Rimbert’s organically farmed young vine Cinsault, this wine is synonymous with summer around the shop. Oscar likes a light chill, to maintain his suave sense of cool.

2014 Domaine du Mortier “Brain de Folie” St Nicolas de Bourgeuil

Domaine du Mortier is a 9 hectare vineyard located in the Saint Nicolas de Bourgeuil AOC, which lies between Angers and Tours. Brothers Fabien and Cyril Boisard were quite young when they started Domaine du Mortier nearly ten years ago. They don’t come from a family with a long wine making history, but you would never know that when tasting their pure, silky and elegant wines. All are bottles unfiltered & unfined. The vines are cultivated via Selection Massale, a labor intensive and time consuming practice of selecting the best vines in a vineyard and propagating through cuttings.

Brain de Folie is apparently slang for hangover, but this is a light Loire Valley Cab Franc, so how bad can it be? Two weeks of carbonic maceration lend this wine its refreshing, food friendly, totally quaffable character. Porch-pounder! 

New Jenny & François, Introducing Greenhook Ginsmiths, Tasting Spirits

snow bank st georgeThis week we’re all about that booze, ’bout that booze, ’bout that…ah never mind. BUT! We really do have some cool new spirits we’re showcasing in the shop today and Saturday. First up is Gabe Rodriguez from Origin Beverage, tonight, 5-7PM. He’ll have South Boston Irish Whiskey from Grand Ten Distillery and St. George California Reserve Apple Brandy. Personally, we can’t believe there’s a fancy-schmancy distillery on Dot Ave. in Southie. Some of us at Campus hail from those parts, and South Boston Irish Whiskey is most definitely NOT what you’d get in your glass at Triple O’s! My how times change… Be sure to stop by tonight for a smooth sip of gentrifica…er…progress! as well as the St. George Apple Brandy, which really is an “apple orchard in your glass”.

Barr-Hill-TrioSaturday, 4-7PM. No beer tasting this weekend, instead it’s “Honey for your Honey” (Because it’s Valentine’s Day!) with Jessyloo Rodrigues of Caledonia Spirits. Jessyloo will take you through this latest storm–unless winters’ wrath gets the best of us–with Barr Hill Gin and Vodka, made with & distilled from honey. And if you’re still looking for your honey, or you’re all fed up with honey, well…this is STILL damn good gin and vodka, so toast yourself and show St. Valentine the hand.

Lastly in Booze News! We’re happy to have some seriously delicious straight outta Brooklyn gin on our shelves: Greenhook Ginsmiths, the vacuum distilled spirits taking NY by storm. Vacuum distillation removes air pressure from the still, which allows for lower temperatures during distillation, which in turn protects the delicate, nuanced flavors of the gin. These are lovely, vibrant, and exceedingly aromatic. Allow the Beach Plum Gin Liqueur to take you away to warmer, sunnier times. You can almost feel the sand between your toes!

Processed with MoldivAnd finally, we may be nearly neck deep in snow, but it MUST be almost spring since new arrivals are starting to roll in. We got a little stash from Jenny & François this week and we’ll be opening some up for our Friday wine tasting. Choosing wines for the shop is an evolving & ongoing process for us; we don’t pick wines by profit-margin analysis, or just to fill holes on the shelf, or for their flashy labels (but check out these labels!). We’re looking for longterm relationships with quality producers and importers. Don’t get us wrong, flings are great fun! But a little loyalty goes a long way. And when we get to support small family producers and importers in the process, it’s a win-win! So you’ll be seeing more from Jenny and the like; some will be new producers, others will be new vintages of familiar names, but they will all be GOOD! At least we think so.

Speaking of loyalty, we cannot thank everyone enough for continuing to make the arctic adventure to our shop. Through snow, sleet, snow banks, treacherous sidewalks & narrow, slippery streets, you guys keep making it through our door. We are eternally grateful! In return, we’ll try to always keep you in good booze.

Next Thursday, February 19th, 5-7PM we’ve got Jen Ferreira, brand ambassador for Lucas Bols, bringing us some Dutch Courage, in the form of Bols Genever and Barrel Aged Genever.

New Beer!

This week we have the latest Stone Collaboration 22, Japanese Green Tea IPA brewed with Baird Brewing and Ishii Brewing. We also have their newest rotational release, a gluten-removed IPA called Delicious IPA (So modest!). Continuing with the hop theme, Angry Orchard added a new style to their line-up, a hopped apple cider called Hop’n Mad Apple. We also have a small amount of Midnight Brett from Allagash. And we got more Foolproof Shuckolate, so come and get it!
