Time is short so we're getting right to it...with just a couple announcements: we are open until 10PM Fridays and Saturdays starting tonight; we hope we're not too old for this! And we have a couple of guest tasting events in the shop coming up: RI's Anchor & Hope on Friday, May 5th, and 12th generation Mosel producer Christina Thanisch on Wednesday, June 7th.
5th generation Mosel producer, biodynamic, from 60+ year old vines grown on steep slopes. This is a honeyed, leesy, floral, spicy, ethereally textured pet-nat. More info here on Melsheimer. Stay in one of their guesthouses, oooh!
Vé translates to "look at that!" which when poured translates to perfect rosé in your glass! It's a blend of 70% Caladoc (a crossing of Grenache and Malbec), 15% Merlot, and 15% Marselan (a crossing of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon from an organically-farmed estate in Camargue founded in 15th century, and purchased in the late 1950s by the Michel family. This is fresh, breezy, salty rosé with notes of red fruit and citrus. Close enough to Provence to do the trick. Read more about the producer here.
5th generation, organic estate east of Athens. Savatiano is a white grape that has been cultivated here for almost 4,000 years. Aoton has 6 hectares of densely planted, low-yielding vines; in addition to Savatiano they also grow Roditis, Mandalaria, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes for this wine were harvested at night, then left on the skins for 5 days, wild-yeast fermented, and followed by 10 months on lees. This is a compelling wine; the texture is lush but mineral-driven, evocative of the iron-rich clay the vines are planted on. Green vegetal notes (but not underripe) lead to lemon curd, marzipan, pastry...it's just full of umami. More on Aoton here.
Organic, own-rooted, 40 year old cab & 5% field blend. Cherry, pomegranate, hints of green herbs, granitic minerals on finish.
Founded in 2011 by husband-and-wife duo John House and Ksenija Kostic, who worked together for years at Chehalem, learning the ins and outs of Willamette Valley wine. Ovum started as “a celebration of the diverse expressions of Oregon Riesling.” John and Ksenija source fruit from philosophically aligned farmers throughout the state; they’ve found sites with “blustery Pacific winds, extreme diurnal shifts, and rocky, well-draining soils.”
To best express the vineyards, all of Ovum’s wines are treated the same way in the cellar: natural fermentations, no additions or subtractions except for SO2, extended lees contact of 8-9 months – all in neutral barrels of acacia and oak, as well as Nomblot concrete eggs. More on Ovum.
