Prelude:

It is a strange thing to go through the retail/holiday motions with the shadow of flawed humanity as our eternal backdrop. But carrying on has likely been the way since we drew our first breaths on this planet, determined shortly thereafter that we were special, and then decided to celebrate our existence and our conquests––and things far too vast for us to fathom––on specific days and in specific ways. Now here we are. Ready to party. So, uh...Happy Thanksgiving!

And, you know, cheers to decent humans.

Friday Night Tasting notes, special events, and Party Pack info follows!

P.S. Thanks to Curtis for the drawings!

WINEMAKER VISITS!
NOT TO BE MISSED!

THIS TUESDAY, NOV. 21st, 5-7PM
Meet Vincent Fritzsche (whose name we spell wrong just about every time), here with his lovely, expressive Oregon wines, mostly Pinot Noir, but we'll have Pinot Gris and Blanc too. It's a trilogy of Pinots.

SATURDAY, DEC. 9th, 3-5PM
Meet Borja Perez (and importer Ariana Rolich) and taste through an array of high-elevation, volcanic and maritime influenced wines of Tenerife, Canary Islands.

~This is the good place~
We can't keep up with our chalkboard...will update soon! And we're missing a beer tasting. Someone, someday, at sometime...it'll come to us...

Kidzz Table Thanksgiving Pack, $130, includes 12% discount
The Kidzz (in spirit!) Table Pack is for the slightly adventurous palate, but don't worry, it doesn't veer too far into funky. In fact, the Zafeirakis and Element could've gone in either pack, but they just nudged over the line, mostly due to grape(s) or place, or bottle age...in any event, we think this is a fun collection!

Cantina Marilina Fedelie Terre Siciliane Pét-Nat Rosato is made by two sisters in Sicily who were trained by their father and influenced by local natural wine legend Frank Cornelissen. Their wines are a steal. Organic/biodynamic, and CLEAN. This pet-nat is 100% Nero D'Avola. It is a fizzy, juicy cherry wound around rose petals and raspberries. It's yummy.

Weingut Geierslay 'Vertigo' Mosel Riesling Feinherb 2022 is a touch off-dry, lip-smacking palate refresher from one of Mosel's oldest producers; the Kilburg family is on its 19th generation of winemakers, established in 1465 on the steep banks of the river.

Zafeirakis Malagousia Microcosmos 2022 is from a certified organic, family-run winery in Thessaly, Greece, in the foothills of Mt. Olympus. This white is brimming with melon, ripe pear, and delicate flowers up front on a rounded palate, the finish is long & salty.

Dorcha Carbonic Frankinja is 100% Blaufränkisch from Lower Styria (Štajerska), Slovenia. Organic, hand-picked, and carbonic, as the name spells out. This is popping with white and black pepper, fresh fruit, and rustic earth on the finish. It’s compellingly delicious. Or magically.

2023 Las Jaras Slipper Sippers Nouveau is from organically farmed old vines (planted in the 40s and 50s) from North Coast, CA, 65% Zinfandel, 35% Carignan, made in the style of Beaujolais Nouveau. It’s full of plums, tart berries, chocolate covered cherries, with zippy acidity keeping it fresh and lively.

Element Can't Stop/Won't Stop Finger Lakes Red 2016 is a red blend of Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Gamay, Merlot, and a touch of Blaufränkisch, vinified & aged 18 months in neutral barrique. The tangy/twangy nose opens up to reveal tertiary, earthy aromas. On the palate chocolate & baking spices mingle with wild strawberry & ripe raspberry supported by savory/umami notes. This wine does like to be decanted, but it’s not 100% necessary.  We have a very long note on our site about this wine. The producer has had a string of missed vintages due to extreme weather events, so scoop up what you can when you can.

The Main Course Thanksgiving Pack, $140, includes 12% discount
The Main Course Party Pack selection might have slightly more traditional players, but it is no less exciting!

Chétif Quart Crémant de Bourgogne Brut is Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and maybe a touch of Aligoté from an organically-run family property established in 1978. This is a lovely sparkling wine, with aromas of white flowers, lemon, biscuit…the palate is creamy but bright, with flavors ranging from green fruits, to brioche. A crowd pleaser, for sure. If not, you’re hanging with the wrong crowd ;-)

Ferrando Erbaluce Di Caluso 2022 is 100% Erbaluce, an ancient white variety that originated and is only found in the alpine foothills of the northwestern corner of Piedmont. It has a bright acidity, an underlying salty minerality, and a complex structure with notes of honey and yellow fruits.

Husch Vineyards Mendocino Estate Chardonnay 2022 is from a small, family-owned and operated winery…in fact, it’s the oldest winery in the Anderson Valley appellation. This is the perfect domestic Chardonnay to please a crowd; the ripe pear and apple notes are balanced by zesty lemon, backed up by a very light touch of toasted oak. Don’t fear it. Embrace it.

Land of Saints Santa Barbara GSM 2020 is an organic, hand-harvested blend of Grenache, Syrah, and  Mouvédre vinified (25% whole cluster) and aged separately then raised in neutral oak for 11 months. Land of Saints is a collaboration between Angela and Jason Osborne (A Tribute to Grace Wine Company), and Manuel Cuevas (C2 Cellars). This medium-bodied Rhone style red is full of cherries, herbs, and spices.

Guiberteau Saumur Les Moulin 2022, 100% Cabernet Franc from organically farmed old vines on the Breze hill. This is a quiet cab franc, with brambly berries, flinty minerals, green herbs, and a soft finish.

Benoit Cantin Irancy 2019 is organically farmed Pinot Noir from a 5th generation producer just south of Chablis. The oak they use comes from their own property’s trees. This wine is full of delicate-crunchy red fruit and earthy minerals, It’s smooth & silky up front with a light grip of tannins on the finish.
Tasting in the Shop Tonight, 5-7PM

Picture of the line up is at the top of the page. Pete(r) Buckley from Vineyard Road will pour.

Domaine Tissot Crémant du Jura Blanc $34.99

Photo above from Wine Anorak. This wine is mostly Chardonnay & Pinot Noir with about 5% each Poulsard & Trousseau from biodynamically farmed vines. Fermented in stainless steel, full malo, then 18 months in barrel, no dosage––dry dry dry. This wine is focused and graceful, with hints of apple & salty sea spray. Watch this video to learn more about Jura and Tissot.

Sophie Schaal Alsace Riesling 2021, $19.99

Pictured above, Sophie and Julien Schaal, from www.jancisrobinson.com. From a patchwork of vineyards planted on granite, limestone, clay, shale, and sandstone. Fruit is hand-harvested then fermented with native yeast, low (temp) and slow (up to three months) for a vibrant, fruit-forward wine with orange blossom and tropical fruit on the nose, and lemon curd, green apple, and bracing slate-like minerality on the palate.

Giovanni Almondo “Bricco delle Ciliegie” Roero Arneis DOCG 2021 $24.99

The Almondo family (pictured above) has lived in the town of Montà on the norther edge of Piedmont’s Roero for 600 years. The property is now farmed and operated by Domenico Almondo with his sons Federico & Stefano. As Irene eloquently wrote in the August wine club: This area has long been known for grape growing alongside asparagus, peaches, and strawberries. Wooded lands abut vineyard land making Montà a polyculture in contrast to the uninterrupted patchwork of connecting vineyards that form the monoculture of Langhe. The combination of a rich biodiversity, balanced mineral rich soils, dry growing conditions with sufficient winter precipitation make this an ideal environment for the organic farming Az. Ag. Giovanni Almondo practices today.

Bricco delle Ciliegie Arneis is from vines (some old vine plots) planted at 340m-370m on clay, snad, and limestone. 95% is fermented and aged for 10 months in stainless steel, 5% goes into non-toasted French oak. This wine is delicate and fresh with notes of white chalk, lemon, and pear.

Roero Nebbiolo 2020, $26.99

From vines planted at 320m elevation on sand, limestone, and clay. Fermented and aged for 18 months in non-toasted Slavonian oak.

Irene's tasting note: Giovanni Almondo Roero DOCG 2020 has an unusually limpid ruby appearance. The aromas graduate from cranberry to sour cherry to wild black raspberry, then come violet and rose floral notes along with woody vetiver, black pepper and a warming hint of cinnamon. On the palate wild forest berries, an earthy, balsamic smokiness, and more of that lush sour cherry. The tannins are apparent so serve this wine at a classic cellar temperature of around 57° F for maximum deliciousness. And it is delicious.

Ann-Sophie Dubois Fleurie Les Cocottes 2022 $31.99

Ann-Sophie Dubois (pictured above, via www.francaboutwine.com) is originally from the Champagne region of France. With her parent's help, she took over this old-vine domaine (some well over 60 years) in 2007. She farms organically, and has a delicate touch in the cellar, with an emphasis on elegance and purity of fruit. Her wines undergo long macerations, fermentations are with wild yeasts, and there is no new oak, no filtration or fining, and no pumping – just gravity.

Les Cocottes is the only cuvée Anne-Sophie Dubois vinifies whole cluster *with* carbonic maceration (the remainder are traditionally fermented, in the Burgundian style, without carbonic). "Les Cocottes" means “the chicks”, and this is what Anne-Sophie drinks when she’s kicking back with her friends. It’s a fruit-forward style that doesn’t sacrifice any character; it’s full of raspberries, cherries, and other red berries, along with crackling minerality, earthy pepper notes, and fresh & zesty acidity.
