FRIDAY WINE TASTING IN THE SHOP, 5-7PM
We're pairing tonight's tasting with cello music from PVD Cello Fest...or are we pairing cellos with tonight's tasting...hmmm...either way, it's a stellar line up on both counts, and we could always use a little more music in our lives. And wine!
We've gotten some really fun and special wines in recently, but we don't have time to list them all here. A little bit of Teutonic landed, a shmattering of Melsheimer...some other things...check our site or come in and check our shelves!
Here's the lowdown on tonight's wine, you'll just have to attend for the deets on the strings!
8th generation family estate dates to 1735. Organically farmed. Gold/pink hue, fine/creamy bubbles. Notes of peaches, flowers, & pepper followed by grapefruit & lemon. Have as aperitif, w/brunch, w/sweetly-savory dishes...it's versatile & delicious.
Delicate, dry, energetic, precise. 3rd generation Rheingau estate founded in 1893. Organic. Fermentations are with wild yeasts in pressurized tanks (quick & warm) then racked into barrel for minimum of 2 years.
Mostly Pineau d’Aunis w/balance of Pinot Noir & Cabernet Franc. from 50-90 yr old vines grown on limestone slopes. Light-bodied, red fruit, spicy pepper, delish.
Our longest producer note, because we’re recycling an old one:
Envínate (translates to Wine Yourself) is the brainchild of four winemakers, Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, and José Martínez, who became friends back in 2005 while studying enology at the University of Miguel Hernandez in Alicante. Shortly after graduating, they formed Envínate, a project that focuses on exploring old parcels mainly (but not only) in the Atlantic-influenced regions of Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands. No chemicals are used in any of the Envínate vineyards, all parcels are picked by hand, the grapes are foot-trodden, and the wines are fermented exclusively with wild yeasts, with a varying proportion of whole grape clusters included. For aging, the wines are raised in old barrels and sulfur is only added at bottling, if needed.
The Envínate philosophy is: “let each parcela, or single parcel, fully express itself in the finished wine by utilizing old-fashioned farming and winemaking methods. The results are some of the most exciting wines being produced in Spain today.”
Lousa is the name for the slate soil that is the main type in the Ribeira do Sil and Amanda sub-zones of the Ribeira Sacra region. Aldea means village in the Galician dialect. This is a village wine comprised of Mencía, Merenzao, Brancellao, Sousón, Garnacha Tintorera, and Mouratón grown on slate and granite at 400-600 meters elevation; the average vine age is 60 years. The fruit is foot trod and fermented whole cluster with wild yeasts in open top tubs for 25-40 days, then aged in used 300-400 liter French oak for 11 months. A touch of SO2 is added at bottling and the wine is not filtered or fined.
This wine shows red fruit and delicate herbs and minerals on the nose. On the palate is red fruit again, like cherries and strawberries, with fresh floral notes throughout. It finishes graceful and smooth.
That's it! If you've donated to the Amos House Selosse raffle we are pulling a name this weekend. Good luck and thank you!
Cheers to decent humans! One day we'll be the winners...
