The origins of Domaine Patrice Colín go back to 1735; Patrice Colín was the 8th generation to represent the property, located northeast of Vouvray. It totals 28 hectares of (in descending order) Pineau D’Aunis, Chenin, Pinot Noir, Cab Franc, & Chardonnay, planted on flint with a clay-limestone subsoil, with some vines over 100 years old. It’s organic/biodynamic/non-interventionist.
The domaine is in its 9th generation, now in the hands of Patrice’s son, Pierre François. There are two cellars, a new one, close to the family home, and the original, an old, shadowy, series of caves that was used by troglodytes until the mid 1800s. Both cellars exist because the distance from picking to crush could take 20-30 minutes, and that was too long for Colín, where freshness is always top of mind. And now of course it’s necessary for space, etc.
The Coteaux du Vendômois vineyards lie in the Loir and Cher département in the Loir valley to the west of Vendôme. The appellation covers 27 communes. The vineyard area is 120 hectares on soils of chalk (tuffeau) from the Turonian era, broken down into siliceous clay on the steeper slopes, and flint.
